HOW THE FUND STARTED: The Sporting Chance Men of League Cancer Fund began in 2008, thanks to the generosity of the Sporting Chance Cancer Foundation and their major sponsor Fujitsu.

The Men of League Foundation were overwhelmed by a $100,000 donation from the Sporting Chance Cancer Foundation, announced at the Men of League Gala Dinner in 2008.

The donation came in return for the Men of League being able to arrange for the ‘Team of the Century’ players to attend the Sporting Chance Golf Day at Terrey Hills in September. Andrew Johns, Norm Provan, Mal Meninga, Bob Fulton, Ron Coote and Noel Kelly all played golf while Reg Gasnier, John Raper and Graeme Langlands all attended the post golf dinner.

SPORTING CHANCE & MEN OF LEAGUE: Director Jack Hughes says the Sporting Chance Cancer Foundation “was not set up to financially assist individuals suffering with cancer. Ron Coote has been a great supporter of Sporting Chance and he introduced me to the Men of League and the great work it does. The Men of League has the capacity and resources to assist cancer patients so it made sense to set up a Men of League cancer fund. There are great synergies between the two charities.”

Since the Men of League’s inception, Sporting Chance has been a big supporter, particularly the Men of League Gala Dinner. Each year, Sporting Chance takes a table and invites parents of children with cancer to come along and enjoy some respite, with home care arranged for the children.

The Men of League is extremely appreciative of the support of Sporting Chance and Fujitsu. The Foundation would also like to thank members of the Team of the Century for donating their time and enabling this donation to happen.

ASSISTANCE FROM THE MEN OF LEAGUE SPORTING CHANCE CANCER FUND: If you know of someone in the Rugby League Community who is battling both physically and financially with cancer, please encourage them to apply for assistance from the Men of League – Sporting Chance Cancer Fund.

Supported by Fujitsu and their own fundraising events, including a golf day at Terrey Hills, Sporting Chance’s main charter is to support research into a cure for cancer and for Mobile home care units for children with cancer.

The Sporting Chance Cancer Foundation was formed in 1998 by former Australian Cricket Captain Mark Taylor, Rugby League legend Reg Gasnier, Olympian Raelene Boyle and Triple Brownlow Medallist Bob Skilton. It is a non-for-profit organisation committed to financially supporting:

  • Mobile home care units that help make life easier for children with cancer
  • A number of research scholarships for doctors and scientists exploring better ways to treat and overcome cancer

Since their inception and thanks largely to the dedication of a number of renowned companies and sporting identities, they have managed to donate millions of dollars to various projects.

Fujitsu General donates $5.00 from every air-conditioner they sell to Sporting Chance. This magnificent gesture provides ongoing support to their mobile home care units and will enable Sporting Chance to set up further units across Australia.
