Reg Gasnier Update

Reg Gasnier thrilled Rugby League fans throughout the world for several seasons. His silk-like running, combined with his brilliant side-step, tricky body swerve and sheer electrifying speed brought him 219 tries in 223 first class matches.

He played 39 Tests, captaining Australia in eight of them. He made three Kangaroo Tours to England and France, 1959, 1963 and 1967, captaining the 1967 side. He also toured New Zealand in 1961 and 1965, as well as being a member of the 1960 World Cup team. In Test football, Reg scored 28 tries, while in 125 first grade matches for St. George, he finished with 127 tries. In his 21 matches for NSW, he crossed for 17 tries and in six games with City Firsts, he picked up three tries.

A member of Australia's Team of the Century, most Rugby League people have no doubt Reg is the game's best ever centre and there are many who go further, stating he is the game's best ever player.

Born at Kogarah in May, 1939, Reg has had some health problems over the past year or so. At the moment he is a resident of the Miranda Residential Aged Care Facility at 268 Port Hacking Road, Miranda.  He welcomes visits by friends and acquaintances and his eyes light up when he engages in conversation. His mind is still sharp and he remembers his time in Rugby League.

On Wednesday 13 July, two of his team-mates from the 1959 Kangaroo tour, John Raper and John Riley, along with Barry Ross and Bill Gilmour spent an enjoyable hour or more with the champion centre. As well as Rugby League, the conversation topics varied from politics to the cost of living and many other world matters. The two Johns spend many hours visiting their old mate.

On Monday 18 July, John Peard, Warren Thompson, Ron Pearce and Velu took time out to visit the St. George great.

If you are an old friend, team-mate or opponent of Puff's, he would love to see you. Call the facility beforehand on 95253210 to confirm visiting times and other requirements.
